The Setting

The background on this page is the setting for many of the early chapters of this story. It depicts the most beautiful part of Santo Domingo, the malecón. I loved running on this seaside boardwalk while living in Santo Domingo for most of 2013.

The natural beauty of the ocean, especially on the days when the breeze carried the scent of salt and not of rush hour exhaust fumes, was enough to brighten any day after working hard at financial analysis for a microfinance organization all day.

Many Dominicans make a living on the malecón selling water, coffee, or snacks. Others go on a walk with their families or lovers. Some wander down to the Plaza for free zumba classes and outdoor weight equipment. The tourist police patrol the area on motorcycles, but they turn a blind eye to certain illegal business that occurs on their watch--like that described in this story.

The malecón symbolizes for me the natural beauty and joy of family in the Dominican Republic--and also the struggles with poverty, lack of opportunity, and a degraded view of women which affects so many.

About Me

My photo
May we never be too blind or busy to care for others, and may we never be too busy caring for others that we don't take the time to sit at the Master's feet and learn from Him. May we grow each day in intimacy with our Creator and Savior, and may His love grow in us as we learn to love Him more. Every good gift we enjoy comes from the all-wise God, who meets all our needs but not necessarily our wants. Knowing Christ is our ultimate aim. Everything else is loss.
